They are shared only with the family Wylma Augusta Mares, 96, of Schuyler, died peacefully at her home in Schuyler on February 12, 2016, after battling cancer since 2014. Wylma was born August 5, 1919, in Colfax County, the 10th of 13 children of Joseph and Julia(Kroupa) Mares. She attended a one room country school in Colfax County and graduated from Schuyler High School in 1936. She volunteered during WWII, driving 4X4 trucks and received a citation for her service. In 1948, she and her father moved to town from the family farm and Wylma cared for him until his death. She worked for many years at Bolt Variety in Schuyler .She sang in St. Mary's Choir and loved bowling with friends. Her most beloved hobby was caring for her numerous plants and flowers, both indoors and outdoors. Wylma especially enjoyed attending family events and always remembered family and friends with birthday and holiday cards. Throughout her two year illness, her mind remained clear as she recounted details of Mares history, to the joy of her nieces and nephews. She loved to travel and was very proud of the fact Lawrence Welk had asked her to dance Her independent spirit, determination and patience with her illness will live on in the hearts of those who loved her. Wylma is survived by her sister-in-law Delores Mares of Schuyler, brother-in-law Emerson Kaspar, St. Edward, NE and numerous nieces and nephews, spanning five generations.She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, siblings and several nieces and nephews. . |
