Martha Ann Pycha was born on a farm in Colfax Co. to Joseph and Libbie (Basta) Tomasek on February 28, 1932. She was the 4th of 8 children. She attended rural school through 8th grade but got her GED in 1979. She met Joseph Pycha, the love of her life, at a dance in Howells. In March of 1949 they had their first date and Joe asked Martha to marry him. They were members and were married on August 27, 1950 at New Zion Presbyterian Church in Clarkson, NE by Reverend B.A. Filipi.
Martha farmed side by side with her husband, Joe, in Stanton Co. from 1949 to 1979, raising four children. They retired to Schuyler, NE but never slowed down… She was an active member at First Presbyterian Church and served as deacon and a member of the Friendship Circle. Joe and Martha enjoyed traveling, dancing, playing cards with family and friends, hosting family gatherings and planning their next celebration!
Martha was incredibly talented. Family, friends and community were touched by the many gifts of her handiwork. Shortly after marriage, they bought her first sewing machine. She became an excellent seamstress and used that same machine for the next 73 years. Additionally, she showed her love for others through her cooking, baking, loomed-rug weaving, and gardening. Another favorite hobby was crocheting and she gifted countless items to family and friends.
Martha loved her Czech heritage. She spoke and corresponded with many relatives on both sides of the family. She treasured three trips to the Czech Republic, which fostered our on-going ties with family in Europe.
She taught our families what love looks like. Their hearts and home were always open. Her greatest joy in life was loving her family.
